The Basketball NSW State Team Program has produced some of the country's finest basketball players. Athletes from all associations across NSW come together to form two teams to represent the state in the under 16 and under 18 age groups, and one team in the under 20 age group.

Athletes from associations based in the Sydney area will represent NSW Metropolitan while athletes from associations outside of Sydney will represent NSW Country. When in the under 20 age group both Metropolitan and Country will join and represent NSW as a whole.

National Championships are held every year in various states and towns. Hosted by associations with the assistance Basketball Australia, the under 16 and under 18 Championships are conducted in July while the under 20 age group compete in February.

Newcastle athletes have had a consistent presence in the NSW Country Program. To date over 200 athletes from Newcastle have represented their state.

In Newcastle the National Intensive Training Centre Program (ITCP) operates under the guidance of the Basketball Development Manager, Trevor Gallacher and the supervision of NSW National ITCP Head Coach, Peter Lonergan who works full time with NSW Basketball.

The aim of Basketball Australia’s National Intensive Training Centre Program is to identify outstanding basketball athletes, aged between 14-17 years, and develop their mental skills, individual skills and team concepts which will enable them to compete successfully at National and International level.

Scholarship holders are required to attend set training camps (5-6 live-in camps), scheduled events and any ITCP related activities. Athletes will also be required to attend regular small group sessions and individual visits with the State ITCP Head Coach and Development Officer. They are also required to adhere to a "code of conduct", maintain a training diary and sustain a satisfactory level of achievement at School.

U/16, U/17 & U/18 Player Development 2008/ 2009

Basketball Australia announced earlier this year the 2009 National Under 18 Championships will be conducted in the April school holidays.

This change has been brought about in part due to the FIBA World Under 19 Championships now being conducted every two years, and to ensure young players get the opportunity to represent their State.

The change of timing for the Under 18 Nationals from July to April has required Basketball New South Wales change the way the teams are selected and prepared.

Rather than trials being conducted in February and then preparation running through the School Terms One and Two, the Under 18 State squad will now be selected in September/October and preparation will take place in School Terms 4 and 1, leading to the championships.

This date change has also necessitated the U/16 & U17 Waratah Development Program Two Day Camps to link in with the Country and Metropolitan Tour Programs, with all players in these age groups invited to attend the following camps:

Metropolitan players

Sundays 19th and 26th October - U/18 State Team trials from which athletes will be selected to represent NSW Metropolitan at the East Coast Challenge (Under 18 division) and Pacific Coast Sam (Under 17 division) - 30 Males & 30 Females in total.
