The Basketball Association of Newcastle Limited has a long and very proud tradition. Listed below are a number of highlights for our Association. Click here to see what some of our members have achieved

Since the formation of The Basketball Association of Newcastle Limited in 1946, there have been many memorable achievements, including a number of firsts for the Association. These have occurred both on and off the courts, amongst them:

1956

First Association to host the Australian Women's Basketball Championships

1960

First Basketball Association to build a stadium - Wickham Stadium

First Association to appoint an American Coach - Bill Younge

1965

First Association to appoint a full-time Basketball Development Officer - Terry Charlton

1966

First US import to play in a New South Wales team - Jim Kraus

First Association to develop a coaching exchange with Chico State University

1969

Newcastle Basketball outgrew it's Wickham Stadium and moved to a new two court stadium on the present site at Broadmeadow

1972

Additional two basketball courts and a squash court are added to the Centre

1973

Three more squash courts added

Between 1962 -1973, Newcastle won 11 NSW State Championships(open)

1979

Newcastle, through the initiation of Dr John Rasche devised the National Basketball League. Newcastle rightly lays claim to the title "Birthplace of the NBL"

1982

The third set of major alterations and extensions completed at a cost of $1.3million. Three full sized basketball courts added, along with canteen, foyer, sports shop and offices

1986

Newcastle Hunters, first NSW team to win a CBA title

Basketball NSW Team of the Year - Newcastle Park Royal Hunters

1990

Newcastle hosts the Australian Under 14 Men's Club Championships, with Newcastle winning the title

Newcastle wins an unprecedented 5 Junior State Championships: Under 18, 16, 14 and 12 Men and Under 14 Women

1994

Newcastle hosts the Australian Under 14 Women's Club Championships

1997

Newcastle hosts the Australian Under 18 Men's and Women's National

1998

New roof and insulation on Courts 1,2 and 3

1999

Newcastle named NSW Country Association of the Year

Newcastle Hunters Youth League Men – Champions

Newcastle hosts the first ever WNBL League game held out of Sydney

Newcastle hosts the first netball invitational Sydney Swifts v AIS

2000

Newcastle named NSW Basketball Association of the Year

General Manager - Phil Matthews named NSW Administrator of the Year

Recipient of the George Thompson Memorial Award - for Outstanding Contribution to Women's Basketball in NSW

Roger Sinclair Award - For Best Referee's Development Program

Jenny Shepherd named Basketball NSW Volunteer Administrator of the Year

First Premier League Men's Champions - Newcastle Hunters

2001

Newcastle Hunters Under 12 Women - Undefeated State Champions

Newcastle Hunters State League Division 1 Women – Champions

Newcastle hosts the 8th Australian Masters Games - over 1,000 participants

Newcastle awarded Best Coaching Program for Associations with over 2,000 members

Newcastle awarded the Roger Sinclair Award - For Best Referee's Development Program (2 years running)

Jarrod Greedy named NSW Referee's Paid Administrator of the Year and Jenny Shepherd named Non Paid Referee's Administrator of the Year

2002

Newcastle hosts the 2002 School Sport Australia Basketball Tournament - 18 years and Under and 12 years and Under Boys and Girls

Newcastle hosts the Opals World Challenge featuring the Opals, USA, Brazil and France

Newcastle Hunters Under 13 Women - Undefeated NSW State Odd Age Champions

2002 Basketball NSW Referee's Annual Awards - Jenny Shepherd named Referee's Non Paid Administrator of the Year for the third consecutive year, whilst Scott Beker was awarded the National Panel Level 4 Referee of the Year and Jackie Mottram was named the Central Junior League Referee of the Year

Newcastle Basketball – Most Entries in Basketball NSW Competitions

Newcastle awarded Best Coaching Program for Associations with over 2,000 members

Trish Suckling – 2002 Basketball NSW Paid Administrator of the Year

Newcastle awarded Basketball NSW's 2002 Best Association Website

2003

Newcastle hosts the 2003 Australian Marist Catholic Schools Tournament

Newcastle hosts the Australian Under 18 Men’s and Women’s Championships

Newcastle Hunters Under 14 Women finish 4th at the Australian Club Championships

Newcastle Hunters Under 14 Women – Undefeated CJL, Country and State Champions

Newcastle Hunters Under 18 – State Champions

Newcastle Hunters Youth League Men – Champions

Newcastle Basketball – Basketball NSW Champion Association (1,000 – 2,000 members)

Newcastle Basketball – Basketball NSW Most Successful On Court Association (Juniors)

Newcastle Under 14 Women – Basketball NSW Association Team of the Year

2004

Newcastle Hunters Under 14 Men finish 9th at the Australian Club Championships

Newcastle Basketball opened phase one of the 134 bed Broadmeadow Sports Lodge in the old squash courts

2005

Newcastle hosts Under 20 Men & Women and Ivor Burgr Basketball Championships

2006

Newcastle Basketball – Basketball NSW Champion Association (1,000 – 2,000 members)

Newcastle Basketball – Refereeing Program of the Year (Under 2,000 members)

Newcastle hosts Champion ABA National Finals – Won by Geelong Supercats (men) and Ballarat Ladyminers (women)

Newcastle hosts NSW Junior State Championships for under 12 to 14 men and women
