STADIUM SNIPPETS with Neil Goffet

  • Get ready for a whole new ball game in Term 4 when we launch our Saturday 3×3 Comp here at Newcastle Basketball Stadium. Teams of 5 players will compete in under-13s, under-15s, under-17s and Opens from 10.30am each Saturday with three games per day. Cost of this comp will be $120 per player. Registrations opening soon.
  • Registrations are open for the very popular Summer Junior Comp. We have under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 age groups and it runs across Term 4 this year and Term 1 next year. Get some mates together and enter a team, the cost is only $160 per player.
  • We are also gearing up for an announcement on the development application for our new $25 million stadium at Hillsborough.
  • Once the stadium is approved, we will continue our on-going dialogue with Basketball Australia in a bid to make history by entering Newcastle’s first ever team in the Women’s National Basketball League.
  • Newcastle is the birthplace of the National Basketball League, and the Newcastle Falcons were part of history as one of the foundation teams when the NBL started in 1979.
  • Following the Falcons came the advent of the Newcastle Hunters men’s team, the Newcastle Scorpions women’s team and the Newcastle Hustlers junior teams.
  • Perhaps we could unite under one name when we enter the NBL 1 East competition next year and call all teams the Falcons to honour our significant role in the history of the game in Australia.
  • Basketball NSW has rightly suspended all junior and senior representative basketball competitions until further notice. This means our Eastern Junior League, Junior Premier League and Waratah Senior League comps are all postponed until at least early September.
  • The two main determining factors in children aged 0-14 participating in organised sport are parents who play sport and high-income families, a report from the Australian Sports Commission found.
  • Please inform any parents or children from other sports, school mates or community groups that our Basketball Community Foundation exists to assist anyone wanting to play basketball that might not otherwise get the opportunity.
