CONGRATULATIONS Newcastle Basketball junior Jenni Screen on being appointed Deputy Chair of the FIBA Players’ Commission for the next four-year term. During her playing career, Jenni won gold medals with the Basketball Australia Opals at the 2006 FIBA World Championships and 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and bronze at the 2012 London Olympics, and has just completed her first four-year term on the FIBA Players’ Commission.

“Basketball is in my blood. I may no longer play but will always stand up for this sport and those that play it,” Jenni said.

“It’s an honour to represent the most important part of the sport: the athletes. I’m truly grateful and humbled to be the Deputy Chair and will do all I can in my term.”

The appointment comes after another former Newcastle Basketball junior David Reid, the Deputy Chair of Basketball Australia, was one of 13 members elected to the FIBA World Central Board. David is a Newcastle-based corporate and commercial lawyer whose son, Lachlan Reid, is a member of Newcastle’s Youth League Men’s team.

“While basketball in Australia continues to grow as a mass participation sport, I’m also passionate about seeing the game flourish globally,” David said.

“Basketball has so much opportunity ahead and we are looking forward to the next four years. My role with FIBA will also have significant benefits for the sport in Australia.”

Well done to Jenni and David. Great to see a couple of proud Novocastrians flying the flag on the international stage.
