Falcons sign Elias Cato for 2026 NBL1 Season

The Newcastle Falcons are excited to announce the signing of 6’9″ swingman Elias Cato ahead of the upcoming 2026 NBL1 East season.

Cato joins the Falcons after most recently playing professionally with BK Nova Hut Ostrava in the Czech National Basketball League, bringing valuable international experience and versatility to Newcastle’s roster.

Standing at 6’9″, Cato is a modern wing capable of impacting the game on both ends of the floor. His combination of size, athleticism and perimeter shooting allows him to play multiple positions, providing the Falcons with added flexibility across the line-up.

Before beginning his professional career in Europe, Cato played NCAA Division I basketball with the Central Arkansas Bears at the University of Central Arkansas, graduating in 2025. During his senior season he averaged nearly 12 points and six rebounds per game while shooting over 40 per cent from three-point range, highlighting his ability to stretch the floor as a forward.

Cato is also familiar with Australian basketball fans through his time with the Sunshine Coast Phoenix in NBL1 North, where he showcased his scoring ability and defensive presence on the wing.

Newcastle Falcons NBL1 head coach Josh Morgan believes Cato’s skill set and experience will make him a valuable addition as the club prepares for the upcoming season.

“Elias brings great size on the wing and the ability to shoot the ball at a high level,” Morgan said. “He’s a versatile player who can defend multiple positions and fits the style of basketball we want to play this season.”

Cato will join the Falcons in Newcastle as preparations continue for the 2026 NBL1 East campaign. The Falcons open their home schedule on Saturday, 28 March, hosting the Norths Bears at Newcastle Basketball Stadium.
